Sunday

Bit of a Groundhog Day as we went back to Walmer Castle. Bit worried about driving through Dover on a weekend in August but not too bad.

So some further views of the castle.

Gazing at the sea mist (warmer than it looks again), plus added a bit of holiday colour.

And Dungeness. Last time we were here it was just beginning to thunder, so very atmospheric. Less so today.

Saturday – Rye

But before we start, a beautiful morning in Romney Marsh.

As everyone knows, there is a difference between livestock in the North and the South. You will recall the cows were very friendly in Northumberland and the sheep were timid. Here the cows are largely indifferent to my presence, but the sheep are very curious…..

Hi there!

Rye Harbour:

Winchelsea :

Quite a lot warmer than might be assumed from the photos. And Dungeness nuclear power station in the distance.

Friday – Deal

A bit of a lazy day, although we saw much more of the sun than we had been led to expect. So headed around the coast, through Dover (which probably wouldn’t be a good idea tomorrow – first Saturday in August, we expect Dover to be a bit busy).

Kingstown, Walmer and Deal sort of blend into each other, but it is a gorgeous coastline.

View from lunch.

I’ve noted a bit of a theme. No pics of the food (not worth it) but plenty of views.

On the way back had a tiny detour.

Very unassuming from the outside and we didn’t know much about it. But well worth it.

Had to have tea and cake, of course. View from the cafe.

Finished off with a final walk along the beach.

And lucky we packed the deckchairs …

Romney Marsh

A few days, again last minute, in the UK. This time Romney Marsh until Monday.

So many choices of places to stop on the way, so plumped for Sissinghurst.

Spot Eileen in one of the photos.

Checked back, and the last time we were in Sissinghurst was referendum day. Doesn’t take much to remind you of how depressing that is!

Dinner out.

View better than the food, but at least we found a new friend!

Monday

Last day (out of 3!).  Montacute House is very splendid, with all the expected NT accoutrements.
Decided to try to pre-empt the Stonehenge traffic jam, so went home via Winchester.  Again, very fine indeed.
M3 and M25 then behaved themselves.

Sunday

Decided to travel a reasonable distance (in time if not miles) to Dunster Castle, near Minehead.  Just like yesterday it rained, so snuck into the NT cafe for good coffee and cake.
Spectacular castle, high above sea level.
You can see the sea, still drizzly.
The castle garden was spectacularly colourful, though.
Not so sure about the shop’s advertising – it’s still AUGUST!!!!!!
Then down to the coast – here’s the local commuter train.
And a walk along the beach – noting the sky colour …
Then, as we were close to Exmoor, thought we would go and have a nose around.  Through Porlock and up Porlock Hill.  Used to be notorious when the car of choice was a Morris 1100 or a Ford Anglia  which wouldn’t manage, but no trouble these days.
Exmoor spectacular – on a clear day you can see Port Talbot and Cardiff.
Then back to Glastonbury to see sunset over the Tor.

Saturday 27th August

A late summer long weekend.  The sharp-eyed will notice as this blog takes shape that we’re actually in Somerset, not Kent.  But it’s near enough!
M25 being its usual helpful self, but all well until Stonehenge – the A303 is notorious around there.  Anyway, eventually arrived at Stourhead for a coffee.  Torrential rain meant coffee turned into lunch (usual NT fayre, so very reliable!).
Stourhead terrific – must come back in the Autumn as well.

Then on to a few miles outside Glastonbury for our last-minute cowshed – actually very smart with a reasonable view from the terrace.

Then to Wells for dinner and a stroll.

Saturday 25th

Last day.  Decided to go home via Whitstable.
Eileen was very taken by some pictures of Whitstable that were displayed in the Duck, so we hunted out the artist’s studio and bought one.
Then off to Knole in Sevenoaks.  A NT property, so pretty sure what to expect.  Really big shock was that the cafe was closed, so expectations of a nice lunch were cruelly dashed!
And it rained.  Otherwise pretty good!
It has become clear that one of the defining themes of the week is The Sky.  It seems large and ever-changing over the week, so here is a random selection from the week.
The house where we stayed.
Deal.
Margate.
Camber Sands.
Dungeness.
Port of Dover.
Valley near our house.
Whitstable.
Knole (in the rain!).

Friday 24th

Still reeling from referendum and what it will mean.
Didn’t go too far on our last day – a walk around the place we are staying, and still surprised we had never been to this beautiful part of Kent before.
And finally to the Duck in Petts Bottom.  Only 5 miles away but narrow lanes mean very slow progress – nearly half an hour each way!  Terrific value for the 4 course tasting menu for the second time in a week.
And a sunset!
