Gozo

Can’t believe we’ve been here nearly a week. Slowed down to a virtual standstill, although we’ve managed to visit just about everywhere on the island.

Get the sun on the terrace in the morning, so enjoy that. Then a little trip out for a bit of a diversion, an afternoon on the beach, and evenings in our favourite restaurant.

Temples near us (over 5,000 years old so you have to visit)

Beach

Restaurant

The owner lived and worked in Manhattan 30 years ago, and the only other people in last night also lived and worked in Manhattan! It’s a bit different here. And the pasta is superb.

Morning walk

Gozo

It’s tiny – makes Malta look huge. Nowhere is more than a 20 minute drive.

Anyway, the guide books say it’s a beautiful island and here’s a few examples to show it.

Gozo

Final week is in Gozo, which will be interesting as it’s a pretty small island.

A bit of an explore at the north end of Malta before catching the ferry to Gozo.

Yes it really is a Starbucks. Coffee no better than usual, but view is not bad.

Then it’s really just some nice pics again.

Found the flat with decent views

and our local beach.

Eileen’s Birthday

Don’t look quite so glum – we had a lovely day.

Headed out to Rabat and Dingli Cliffs. Again, took less than half an hour to get right across the island.

Birthday dinner in Mdina (one of the best meals we’ve had for ages)

And gave us time to wander around Mdina at sunset, after the coaches had gone so enjoyed the wonderful colours.

Floods, Flats and Bling

Nearly there but couldn’t come up with a third alliteration!

Anyway, excuse for not getting bread for breakfast

Out for my usual morning walk when the heavens opened – I took shelter in a nearby restaurant but when it ended after about 15 minutes, I didn’t fancy crossing the road to the bakery.

The Apartment

Is massive, modern and amazing.

And feels great every time we come back. Interestingly the Maltese plugs are the same as the UK ones so didn’t need to bring any adapters. What they didn’t tell us was that all the electrical goods (bedside lights, kettle, microwave) in the apartment are from Europe so need adapters and they only left us one. Oh the trials of the traveller!

Valletta Again

Took the ferry because it’s quicker and easier and a much nicer arrival.

Then went round the Co Cathedral (although some idiot managed to book tickets online to the cathedral of the same name in New York instead of Valletta – and guess what they wouldn’t let us in without buying another ticket. Should have gone to Specsavers …).

That’s where we found the bling.

And the world famous paintings by Caravaggio. Thought if I copied everyone else and took a selfie in front of a painting I’d never heard of it might make a difference. It didn’t.

And sunset drink.

We’re liking Malta.

Three Cities

Bit of history here, which isn’t really what the blog is usually for. But before Valletta, there were 3 cities on the 3 peninsulas in the map. (That’s the history!)

So we decided to drive and have an explore. (Continuing the car park saga, found the car ok but couldn’t get out – seems no one thought of putting any signs up!

And a new one for us – parking is free in the day but you have to pay at night.

Anyway, it was lovely (and as with all things Malta), small.

Don’t even need a clear day to see Valletta!

And a very good lunch (Maltese Pizza) in a lovely spot.

Quick whizz up to Mdina – probably need to revisit.
